Letters: Supporting school choice
Published on April 19, 2026.
The demand for school choice is at an all-time high, with over half a million Florida students applying for state-funded scholarships for the second consecutive year, according to Step Up for Students. This increase in school choice could lead to more students enrolling and graduating from college, leading to higher job openings across the state. Nathan Hoffman, senior legislative director of the Foundation for Florida’s Future, argues that when families are empowered, students find success. He also criticizes Gov. Ron DeSantis for seeking an outcome in the redistricting case of Louisiana v. Callais, which could result in the elimination of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and potentially rewrite the map to target African American seats in two Florida seats held by African Americans. Hoffman argues that while politicians are criticized for criticizing school choice, they are not offering solutions to issues like affordability and the national debt.
