Chick-Fil-A has changed its waffle fries recipe to increase crispiness and reduce the use of pea starch as a coating to increase the crispiness of the fries due to its naturally high amylose content. Customers expressed concerns about the potential allergen, with some claiming the fries were too hard or bland, while others enjoying the new crispiness. The change was met with complaints on Reddit and Facebook, but the company stated that the fries no longer contain pea starch. However, the EU does not list starch as an allergenic per Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011. Pea starch is the result of protein extraction from the pea and food allergens are most often from the protein in the item. Some groups, like Allergy UK, still warn people against using pea flour, as not all processes remove the protein entirely.
