Recent geopolitical events in the Middle East and Mexico have caused cruise lines to alter their itineraries. Experts suggest that cruise lines are experienced in managing risks and will change routes to protect passengers. Travelers should research destinations, check State Department advisories, and consider booking excursions through the cruise line. The U.S. State Department has advised travelers to leave more than a dozen countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Egypt, citing “serious safety risks.” Meanwhile, unrest erupted in Mexico after a Mexican military operation killed a key figure, and several Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America and Princess Cruises ships opted to skip stops in the city until March 12. Cruise lines may adjust itineraries due to security concerns, military action or civil unrest, along with severe weather.
