Nike has spent millions of dollars on a sub-2-hour marathon, which athletes Sabastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha became the first two men to complete a sanctioned marathon in less than two hours. However, while these athletes were sponsored by Adidas, this has not been officially recognized as the world's fastest marathon runner. This comes after Nike announced that three of its top athletes, Eliud Kipchoge, Zersenay Tadese, and Lelisa Desisa, would compete in a Nike-sponsored race dedicated to this goal in 2018. If the race had been sanctioned by World Athletics, it would have been the fastest marathon in history.
