The Anchorage Assembly has passed a new ordinance making it illegal to feed eagles and other wildlife, including most wildlife, in the municipality. The new law, which prohibits any violators from leaving attractants for wildlife, could result in a $250 fine for a first offense, $300 for a second offense, and a $500 fine for subsequent offenses. The ordinance was passed in a 9-3 vote. It warns that human feeding of birds of prey can have negative consequences, including spreading wildlife diseases and increasing the likelihood of conflict between wildlife, humans and their pets. Despite dissent from members of the public, the new law allows bird feeders to remain legal.
