New York construction workers experienced 20 fatal accidents in 24th year, making construction the deadliest job in the city. The US Bureau of Statistics and Labor revealed that the construction and extraction occupational group had 55 fatal workplace injuries. The accommodation and food services industry was second with seven casualties, followed by the protective service industry with six. The majority of these deaths were caused by falls, slips, and exposure to harmful substances. Advocacy group, the Workers’ Justice Project, highlighted the disproportionate number of job-related deaths experienced by local workers of color, particularly those identified in the Hispanic and Asian demographics. The group is advocating for rigorous safety training, proactive oversight of worksites, and accountability for contractors who violate the law.
