David Lammy urges Labour MPs to back plans to scale back jury trials

UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has urged Labour MPs to support plans to reduce the number of jury trials in England and Wales for crimes that carry a likely sentence of less than three years. The proposed changes would allow magistrates to hear cases that have a maximum sentencing range of up to 18 months. However, some Labour MPs have expressed dissatisfaction with the plans, with three pledging to vote against them in an initial vote.
