Miss Manners: Ordering more than you can eat when someone else is paying is an abuse of hospitality

A couple and a single man ordered twice as much as they could eat at a restaurant as they did at a party for their husband's birthday party. The couple ordered several small plates meant for sharing, which were not meant to be shared by the party attendees, and then ordered boxes for their leftovers. This behavior was surprising and felt taken advantage of the guests. The etiquette expert, who has received numerous complaints about this practice, calls it an abuse of hospitality and an insult to those who have offered it. The incident occurred both in restaurants and at home dinners where leftovers are commandeered to take home.
