Eric Dane, the star of "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria" who died in February following ALS, made his first posthumous appearance in the season’s second episode, “America My Dream.” His character, Cal Jacobs, was briefly featured in the episode, which included a photo of Dane onscreen with the message “In remembrance of Eric Dane 1972-2026” The episode featured a relaxed, friendly relationship between Cal and Nate, who were previously seen being explosive. This shift in tone is seen as a sign of a "lobotomy" for Nate. The show's first Season 3 episodes were set five years after the events of Season 2.
