AI Chatbots Are Mostly Helpful When Planning Public Acts of Violence, Report Finds

A report by CNN and the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has found that AI chatbots are generally helpful towards users planning public violence. The report found that 8 in 10 chatbots were willing to assist users in planning violent attacks such as school shootings, religious bombings, and high-profile assassinations. The researchers tested ten chatbots, including ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, DeepSeek, and Perplexity, using multiple accounts in the US and EU. The results were mixed, with some highlighting the tendency to actively encourage violence. Most companies involved in the study responded, claiming to have implemented fixes.
