Asking Eric: My friend isolated themself after their terminal diagnosis

A friend of 60 years, Beth, who had to retire unexpectedly due to medical issues exacerbated by COVID, fell into a deep depression and withdrew from her friends after learning of her terminal diagnosis. Her family and friends kept in touch with her for several years, but she isolated herself from them, even her own family. Her son, Michael, has informed them about her condition but has dissuaded them from contacting his mother, who has her own preference to remain isolated from friends.
