Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has proposed a new rideshare tax, increasing it from a 20-cent per ride fee proposed earlier this year to $1 per trip. The fee would bring in $24 million this year and increase to $48 annually in future years. The proposal, which requires City Council approval, is expected to face a $300 million deficit in the school district, which has proposed eliminating hundreds of positions. However, it could allow the district to save over 200 positions, but not completely close the budget gap. The new tax would add to what the city's parking authority already charges rideshare companies.
