Today in Chicago History: Cabrini-Green’s new resident — Mayor Jane Byrne

The Chicago Tribune archives reveal that in 1981, Mayor Jane Byrne moved into Cabrini-Green housing development and remained there for 25 days. The Chicago White Sox lost to the Seattle Mariners 3-2 in 12 innings at the Kingdome. In 1995, Sears shareholders approved a plan to spin off Allstate, then the country's second-largest insurance company, Allstate. The company was founded in 1931 and later became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sears. The name Allstate was chosen using the Allstate Automobile Tire trademark. In 1925, Chicago Cubs catcher Carson Kelly hit for the cycle, marking the longest cycle drought by a National League team since Mark Grace in 1993.
