Gerald Bradshaw, an international admissions consultant with Crown Point College in Crown Point, argues that personal finance education is crucial in preparing for adulthood. According to pollsters, 80% of Americans believe personal finance should be required for all students, compared to 69% for economics. This disparity reflects a generation who came of age during a pandemic of financial issues and graduated into a housing market designed to exclude them. Students who took a high school personal finance class are five times more likely to graduate fully prepared than those who did not. The curriculum teaches students to think like policy advisors, not like adults who need to buy a car, file a tax return, or decide whether to carry a credit card balance. In 2023, Indiana will become the 19th state to guarantee personal finance for all high school graduates.
