A fire whirl or "firenado" appeared over a field in Newton, Alabama, during a controlled fire. The phenomenon was captured on camera by local resident Chelsea R Gieselmann and is closely related to other swirling atmospheric phenomena such as dust devils, water spouts, and tornadoes. The firenado can cause wind damage similar to weak or moderate tornadoes and can be caused by the wind.
