SEE THE GOOD: Salem Paralympian charts her own course to make sailing accessible
Published on March 25, 2026.
Former Paralympian Maureen McKinnon is working to make sailing accessible for anyone who wants to set sail. She began her journey after a paralyzing fall from a seawall in 1995, but returned to sailing after a chance encounter with another wheelchair-using sailor at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead. McKinnon competed at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, making history as the first woman to represent team USA in Paralympetic sailing and winning a gold medal. She is currently working to organize a clinic for blind sailors using adaptive technology and is looking to borrow some auditory assistant devices for sailors to hear where other boats are.
