Ohio Sen. Terry Johnson has pushed for Senate Bill 380, which he claims is a safeguard for constitutional rights in the state and aims to address multiple global issues, including laws and customs inconsistent with local and central protections. The bill, officially named An Act to Affirm and Ensure the Supremacy of the Constitutions of the United States of America and Ohio, would prevent state agencies, public institutions, political subdivisions from permitting any “religious law, custom or practice” or foreign legal framework that conflicts with constitutional protections. It also prohibits systems that restrict a person’s right to leave a religion or allow physical violence. However, it includes an exception for “reasonable parental discipline of children”, a provision not currently included in state laws on domestic violence and child endangerment. The legislation has been dubbed ‘no-go zones’ by critics, suggesting areas where Muslim-majority settlements in Europe are run by religious or quasi-government bodies that operate outside state authority.
