Swimmer Katie Bain almost died after going into septic shock after her appendix ruptured. She spent three weeks in an induced coma and had to relearn how to walk again after learning to walk. This weekend, she is running the London Marathon to raise awareness of the devastating condition, which kills over 4,000 people in Scotland every year. Sepsis is caused by the body's response to an infection spirals rapidly out of control, leading to multiple-organ failure and death. Despite being in a stable condition, Katie was determined to make the most of the 2642km (26km) run in 2026.
