NASA’s new astronaut class gets a name

NASA's 24th astronaut class, chosen in 2025 and not expected to graduate until 2027, has been named the Platypi by the previous class, the Flies. The name reflects the idea of a team with a wide range of strengths working together towards a common goal. The Platypus, a mammal that lays eggs and has a bill like a duck, a tail like a beaver and the body of an otter, is unique in its unique appearance. The selection of Platiopi for the plural form of platypus was controversial due to its Greek origins and its use of the term 'platypi' as a Latin plural.
