Lincoln Children's Zoo has named its rare female Matschie's tree kangaroo joey, named Samala. The name was chosen after a vote by the zoo's community and was named after a village birth attendant in the YUS Conservation Area of Papua New Guinea. Samala has been part of the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program's health project since 2005 and studied to become a midwife. The zoo supports the Tree Kangaroo Conservation program and is a partner in Tree Kangaro of Piaudan SAFE, a program focused on saving the species from extinction. The Zoo said Samala's name highlights how conservation and community support are closely connected.
