110-year-old Home Depot rival closes

The number of local hardware stores that have been around for over 100 years has decreased, largely due to consumer behavior shifting. However, this has not prevented local hardware retailers from closing, including 110-year-old Quincaillerie Notre-Dame hardware store in Montreal. The North American Retail Hardware Association (NARHA) is addressing this issue, highlighting the lack of an heir to take over the business. Consumer loyalty in retail has also weakened, with half of consumers reporting switching brands in 2022, compared to one-third in 2020. The industry faces challenges, with Home Depot and Lowe's dominating the market and Amazon generating 11% of sector sales.
