The Bishop Ford Freeway, or Interstate 94, is undergoing a $93 million rehabilitation project that aims to improve safety, traffic flow and reliability for the more than 167,000 vehicles that use the expressway daily. 9.5 miles of outbound lanes from west of Martin Luther King Drive to 159th Street are closed for patching and resurfacing, and road shoulders will be used to keep two lanes open. The project also includes rehabilitation for bridges carrying the Bishop Ford over the Indiana Harbor Belt railroad, Dolton Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, and the two bridges over the Little Calumet River. The freeway will return to three lanes in December, with ramps expected to reopen in Spring 2027. The construction zone includes detours and closures for various ramps and lanes overnight and during weekends.
