Punch the Japanese snow monkey captures hearts while kin face culls

The Japanese agriculture ministry has reported that monkeys caused $4.86 million worth of damage in 2024 alone, prompting the capture and killing of thousands of monkeys a year. This issue divides among farmers who suffer from stolen crops and advocates for a more humane solution. Primatologist Takayo Soma argues that culling monkeys without proper justification is ineffective and invites another to take their place. Some advocate non-lethal measures such as electric fences and "monkey dogs", or pet dogs trained to chase away intruders.
