A study out of Brazil has found that a low dose of the antibiotic minocycline, typically used to treat acne, rosacea, and a range of bacterial infections, could potentially help people with panic disorder. The drug, which is also known for its strong anti-inflammatory effects, may be used as an alternative for patients who don't respond to psychiatric medications like benzodiazepines. The study, supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation, found that participants who took minocyCline showed a drop in pro-inflammatory markers in the body, including interleukin (IL)-2sRα and IL-6, and an increase in IL-10. The researchers also found that the improvement in symptoms likely occurred through the reduction of inflammation.
