NASA's Perseverance rover found evidence of ruby-like crystals in a rock named Coffee Cove, along with two others, a gemological first on the Red Planet. The discovery was presented by an international team of researchers at the 57th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas. However, the exact chemical composition of the crystals is uncertain. They were classified as corundum, a mineral made of aluminum and oxygen, which is colorless but imbues it with brilliant hues. The researchers suggest that the crystals may have formed under different conditions than those on Earth due to their formation mechanism. However there is no conclusive evidence for the discovery of Martian rubies.
