‘Trying everything we can’: Victims, lawmakers push for stricter AI regulations

The arrest of 20-year-old Floyd County man, Harrison Prifogle, has raised questions about the protections in place for victims of AI-generated pornography. Currently, as this is Prififogle's first offense, he can only be charged with a misdemeanor for the AI image of his adult co-worker. One Indiana lawmaker, Craig Haggard, tried to change this penalty in the 2026 session, but was never considered for consideration. He also proposed increasing penalties for distribution of the sexually explicit AI material from a misdemeanor to a Level 6 felony, similar to the federal 'TAKE IT DOWN Act'. Shannon Heacock and John Burnett, whose son, Elijah committed suicide at 16 after a sexual AI image was used to extort him for cash, believe the current regulations around AI do not go far enough.
