He was seen as a viable alternative to Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primaries, but dropped out of the race after a second-place finish in the Iowa caucuses. Desantis argued that if Trump were not running in 2024, he would have received the support of most of the president's backers. The latest 2028 GOP presidential primary polls show Vice President JD Vance as the overwhelming frontrunner.
