Barry Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, confirmed that George Steinbrenner called him when he was a free agent in 1992 and made an offer with a deadline. This was unusual as Steinbenner was under suspension from mid-1990 until March 1993. Borris felt uncomfortable about the Yankee offer, as it would have made him the highest paid player and not yet official owner of the Giants. Both Bonds and his agents believe that Bonds preferred the Giants as they grew up in San Francisco.
