A documentary, Your Attention Please, premiered at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, explores the relationship between social media and AI. The film, directed by Sara Robin, interviews researchers, technologists, and families affected by social media, reveals that social media has fundamentally reshaped how social validation works. Trisha Prabhu, a digital-safety advocate and inventor of the anti-cyberbullying technology ReThink, argues that AI tools can create abusive messages at scale, create convincing impersonations or create deepfakes online, which could exacerbate loneliness or encourage harmful behavior. The documentary's release has been supported by over 25 organizations focused on digital well-being, including organizations such as Common Sense Media, Protect Young Eyes, Mothers Against Media Addiction, the Center for Humane Technology, Smartphone Free Childhood and Scrolling to Death.
