Mexico's Economy Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, has announced the permanent renewal of tariffs on steel imports from Asian countries without a trade agreement with Mexico. The tariffs, which range from 10% to 35, will protect Mexico's domestic industry from unfair imports from Asia, including those from South Korea, Vietnam, China, and other nations. Ebrad also announced a new policy of increasing government purchases based on Mexican content, directing government entities to prioritise national content over lower costs. He criticised the tariffs imposed on steel products by the United States as being "illogical" and described them as "unprecedented". The new policy aims to reduce Mexico's dependence on Asian imports and support the domestic steel industry.
