The Washington State GOP is working on a repeal effort for the "million tax" that passed the legislature, which would create an income tax for Washingtonians who make more than a million dollars each year at a rate of 9.9%. The first $1 million of someone's annual income would be deducted, and anything earned after that would be subject to the tax. If signed, the new income tax will take effect on Jan. 1, 2028, with the first payments due in April 2029. The state party is working with Representative Jim Walsh (R-Aberdeen), chair of the state GOP, to create an initiative to repeal the tax before it can be officially implemented. Walsh also questioned the constitutionality of the legislation, given that the tax is not technically uniform as the state constitution mandates.
