St. Petersburg's process for selecting a plan to redevelop Tropicana Field is underway, with the potential developer responsible for the future of the Historic Gas Plant District, a downtown area named after the Black neighborhood displaced by the ballpark. City staffers have recommended that four of the eight proposals move forward, with one withdrawing the proposal. Once chosen, the city will host a public meeting with the developers and gather resident feedback. The selection will be vetted by the City Council and the Community Benefits Advisory Council, a resident panel that assesses city-funded projects for benefits such as affordable housing and environmental sustainability. This comes after a majority of City Council members urged the mayor to slow down the project.
