Lawmakers propose historic ban on controversial hunting practice: 'We need every ally we can get'

In Colorado, a bill seeking to ban private beaver kills on public lands is becoming part of a broader debate on hunting in the state. Animal protection groups are supporting the beaver-protecting House Bill 1323 as a measure to manage increasing wildfire risks and drought conditions. However, hunters and trappers argue that it is a ploy to eventually forbid all hunting. Samantha Miller from the Center for Biological Diversity argues that protecting beavers is a must due to the state's financial difficulties and heightened wildfire risk, low snowpack, and persistent drought. The bill goes further than a measure banning the commercial sale of animal fur, including the skins of beavers, red foxes, and bobcats.
