A new poll has revealed that Xavier Becerra has surged in popularity, gaining 11 points and tying billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer for second place. This comes after Eric Swalwell's controversial exit from the California governor's race. Since 2010, California operates under a top-two primary system, where the two highest-polling candidates, regardless of party, advance to the general election. Despite this, Republican Steve Hilton remains in the lead for California governor with 20% of the vote, two points down from the beginning of April. Meanwhile, Becerara has faced criticism from both the Left and Right over his record on abortion policy and his tenure as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
