An ex-girlfriend of Tanner Horner, who pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, testified about an incident that left her deeply concerned about his mental state after their relationship ended. The woman, identified only as Reba, said she and Horner first dated in high school and that after their breakup, she became worried about his behavior. They later reconnected as adults and resumed a romantic relationship, though it ended after three months. Horner allegedly abducted Athena Strand and killed her in his truck. The medical examiner determined that Strand died from blunt force trauma, smothering and strangulation.
