In 2021, filmmaker Alex Steves began following conservative climate activists for a documentary, titled "The [Conservatives," following them for a five-year project. Steves argues that conservatives have a long tradition of environmental engagement but have been overlooked in our national discourse. He argues that their commitment to conservation has been lost in the media spotlight on Republican legislators who have largely abandoned their historical values in favor of deregulatory corporatism. This article suggests that focusing on in-group voices who represent inauthentic values may be the best remaining tool for building a more durable coalition of environmentally concerned voters. The most effective messaging is from farmers, wildland firefighters, fishermen, cowboys, hunters, game wardens and foresters, who care deeply about family and legacy. Documentary filmmakers have been slow to acknowledge this, Steves writes. The film, "The Conservatorsatives," is directed by Steves and is featured in The Hollywood Reporter's 20th edition of The Sustainability Issue.
