Hawaii legislature enters final stretch as key bills hang in the balance

With the end of the 2026 legislative session looming, lawmakers are working to reach agreements on several major bills, including a bill aimed at lowering vehicle registration costs for Oahu drivers and increasing the cost of the industry. The agreement can be reached if both parties agree, which could be signed into law or vetoed. The bill aimed to cap Honolulu’s vehicle weight tax could cost the city approximately $135 million annually. A bill aimed towards boosting the film industry is also progressing, with a conference hearing scheduled. Other proposals include a bill to shift the cost to companies linked to climate disasters onto companies tied to fossil fuels and legislation targeting illegal fireworks.
