Astrophists are concerned that SpaceX's plan to launch a million AI data centers in space could significantly impact astronomy. The proposed constellation of one million orbiting data centers could result in satellite streaks that could severely impair observations. The company's application for the constellation was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Jan. 30. Astronomers believe the proposed constellation could result from tens of thousands of objects brightening the night sky, potentially leading to significant disruptions to astronomical observations. Each of the orbiting data centres could be up to 330 feet long, circling Earth at altitudes between 310 miles and 1,243 miles. The project would also increase the risk of strikes on Earth. The development comes as astronomers prepare to introduce some of the most powerful sky-observing machines of all time, including the $10 billion opened last year or the $2 billion currently under construction in Chile.
