Scientists successfully revived a 24,000-year-old “zombie worm” that had been frozen in Siberian permafrost for 24,00 years, revealing new insights into how life survives in extreme environments over extended periods. The small, multicellular animal, identified as a rotifer, has been frozen deep within the Yedoma formation, which is believed to have sustained the specimen for tens of thousands of years. Researchers successfully thawed the rotifer under controlled laboratory conditions and discovered it had resumed normal biological functions and was able to reproduce again asexually. This discovery could help scientists understand how life can survive in extreme conditions. However, scientists warn that larger organisms may not be able to be revived after similar periods of freezing.
