Former congresswoman Katie Porter of Orange County has promised to return to tuition-free college for governor, promising to eliminate much of the tuition at public universities. This move is seen as a bold move by a politician without specifying how to fund it. However, it is unlikely to happen, as California companies would benefit from a more educated workforce and public universities from their revenue streams dependent on corporate profits. The proposal could attract middle-class families to California and keep those already here from fleeing. The cost of tuition is not widely discussed, but California could easily afford it long before it expanded into the world's fourth largest economy.
