The Public Policy Institute of California has found that more registered Republicans are leaving California more than Democrats, driven by politics and decreased housing costs. The study found that between 2020 and 2024, approximately 39 percent of those leaving California registered as Republican (compared to 25 percent Democrat), and those entering California were disproportionately Democrat (54 percent). Nevada appears to be gaining many of these Republicans from California. The institute also found that in 2024, the Silver State ranked highest for gaining residents from California per 1,000 residents, at a higher rate than Florida and Texas. The report highlighted dissatisfaction Republicans in California have with the governance structure of Democrats who have controlled both the governor’s office and the state Legislature for over a decade. It also noted a shift in migration from California to other states, with low-income Californians becoming more likely to move to states with cheaper housing prices.
