A shelter, yes; an intake center, no

The East Village residents are challenging the city's plan to place an intake center for homeless men on E. 3rd St. They sued the city, and a judge issued a temporary restraining order stopping the move. This is not a shelter, but an intake centre for all homeless men from around the city. Volunteer social worker, Donah Donohue, argues that this is a major change in use and represents a significant shift in use from a shelter run by Project Renewal to a center for the most problematic segment of the homeless population. Donahue also lives near the site and criticizes the lack of police officers assigned to the site.
