Salem, Massachusetts, has named its new interim superintendent, replacing current Superintendent Steve Zrike who is leaving the district to become the state Secretary of Education. The new role will be held by Interim Superintendent of Finance and Operations Elizabeth Pauley, who will also serve as deputy superintendent during this period. Both roles are set to expire on July 31, when the next permanent superintendent is expected to start. Carbone's role will include managing major projects such as budget, the school merger, MCAS, the dual-language expansion, and contract negotiations. The timeline for the permanent position will begin in March, with screening of candidates in April, determination of finalists and public forums in May and June, and selection of a candidate for appointment by the end of June.
