Gabe Newell, now known as the future Steam god, revealed in an interview with Next Generation magazine that he was influenced by Super Mario 64, Ultima Underworld, and Resident Evil 2 as key influences for Half-Life. Despite being a former Microsoft employee, Newell was more adept at Nintendo's platformer than Valve's FPS game, Half-life. He cited these games as an inspiration for the immersive sim genre and their approach to player agency as a model for everything from Deus Ex to BioShock. However, he also mentioned that he did not perform well in Half Life's single-player campaign or deathmatch mode. Newell later stated that he still felt confident in his ability to create games at Valve and that he had to step aside from making games at the company after Portal 2 due to his lack of ability to come up with ideas.
