The attempted assassination of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner by a would-be assassin, Cole Tomas Allen, has led the Justice Department to secure the detention of Allen, who already faces three criminal charges including attempting to assassinate President Trump. Allen allegedly planned to target White House officials from the day before the dinner. The Justice Department has also used this incident to challenge the National Trust for Historic Preservation's challenge to build a White House ballroom, but the group turned it down. The administration has criticized the Trust for its name as "FAKE" and called the lawsuit a "dangerous" move. The decision on the ballroom will be made next week.
