House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have announced a plan to advance a plan that would fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without funding for ICE and CBP, with those agencies deferred to a later reconciliation bill. The plan, which mirrors what the Senate previously proposed, was rejected by House Republicans, with some promising never to support a DHS funding package without funds for ICE or CBP. The announcement comes after House Republicans rejected the Senate-passed bill, which they called a "joke" and vowed not to support. The Senate is expected to take up the DHS bill and try to pass it by unanimous consent Thursday morning, with House action to follow at an undisclosed time.
