The US's recent strike on Iran was criticized as unprovoked and a violation of international law by members of Congress and foreign leaders, as well as Spain, Norway, the European Union, and the United Nations. Critics argue that the strike was unjustified as there was no immediate threat, a claim that Iran's five-decade campaign against the US began in 1979. The author argues that Iran has been at war with the US for decades, starting in 1979 when Iranian revolutionaries seized the U.S. Embassy and held American diplomats hostage for 444 days. They also highlight Iran's use of force, proxies, and hostage-taking as tools of state policy. They argue that preventive action is illegal unless a threat is immediately imminent, but international law does not require a nation to wait for the next attack. Despite calls for a ceasefire, the author warns against complacency and warns against ignoring the regime's history of aggressive actions.
