A copper mine in southeastern Utah, Mariana Minerals, has resumed production after a hiatus since 2024. The company, led by Tesla veteran Turner Caldwell, has revitalized the operation into the world’s first autonomous mine, using autonomous tools for mining, refining and capital project execution. The move marks a significant step towards using artificial intelligence in physically demanding work. The firm is reducing refining costs by 30% and mining costs by 50% by using autonomous drills and robotic haul trucks. It hopes to produce 50,000 tons of refined copper a year by 2030 and recycle pre-used copper and refine the material. The price of copper is currently at about $13,000 a ton.
