The New Jersey Poison Control Center reported that last year, 167 children under age 6 required hospital treatment after accidentally ingesting marijuana gummies and other edibles. This is the highest number since the legal weed market debuted in 2022. The greatest threat to young children is accidental ingestion of over-the-counter and prescription drugs left near reach. Babies, toddlers, and children younger than six accounted for 35% of the 54,294 contacts made to the poison control hotline in 2025. The center has distributed lockable bags to help secure medications and marijuana edibles, and encourages the public to call the center’s hotline or 1-800-222-1222 to inquire about accidental exposures or ingestions.
