The Food and Drug Administration (ISP) has been criticized for attempting to regulate dietary supplements, particularly in the early '90s, as part of a campaign led by industry stakeholders to prevent the agency from doing so. The campaign successfully led to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, which prevents the FDA from keeping unsafe and ineffective supplement products off the market.
